TRIP ITINERARY

FULL DAY TOUR:

Cusco Hotel Pick-Up → Mollepata → Soraypampa → Humantay Lake Hike → Return To Cusco

Your Humantay Lake adventure begins with pick-up from your hotel or Airbnb in Cusco between 4:15 and 4:45 AM. The exact pick-up time will be confirmed after your reservation, once we receive the name and address of your accommodation. Travelers staying near the historic center may also meet us directly at the Machu Picchu Team office, located at Portal Nuevo 270, Plaza Regocijo, at 4:45 AM.

At approximately 5:00 AM, we will depart from Cusco and travel toward the town of Mollepata. The drive takes around two and a half hours and offers beautiful views of traditional villages, valleys, and Andean landscapes. Upon arrival in Mollepata at approximately 7:30 AM, we will stop at a local restaurant to enjoy a complete breakfast before continuing the journey.

After breakfast, we will travel for approximately one more hour to Soraypampa, located at 3,900 meters above sea level. This is the starting point of the hike to Humantay Lake. Before beginning, your guide will provide important instructions about the trail, weather conditions, altitude, and the recommended walking pace.

The uphill hike to Humantay Lake takes approximately one and a half to two hours, depending on your physical condition and walking pace. Along the route, you will enjoy impressive views of the Humantay and Salkantay snow-capped mountains, as well as the dramatic scenery of the Peruvian Andes.

Upon reaching Humantay Lake, located at approximately 4,220 meters above sea level, you will have time to rest, take photographs, explore the surroundings, and admire its beautiful turquoise waters. Your guide will explain the cultural, spiritual, and environmental importance of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

After enjoying the lake, we will begin the descent to Soraypampa. The downhill hike takes approximately one to one and a half hours. Our tourist transportation will be waiting at the trailhead to take us back to Mollepata.

At approximately 2:00 PM, we will enjoy a buffet lunch at a local restaurant in Mollepata. The buffet offers a variety of Peruvian dishes, salads, side dishes, and vegetarian options. After lunch, we will begin the return journey to Cusco, which takes approximately three hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

We expect to arrive in Cusco between 6:00 and 6:30 PM. The tour finishes at Plaza Regocijo, near Cusco’s Plaza de Armas and the Machu Picchu Team office.

Expert Bilingual Guides
Explore Humantay Lake with an experienced professional guide who speaks both English and Spanish. Our guides are trained not only to coordinate every part of the tour safely and efficiently, but also to share valuable information about the region’s culture, history, traditions, geography, and natural environment. Throughout the journey, your guide will provide clear instructions, answer your questions, assist you during the hike, and help you adapt to the altitude and trail conditions. Friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive, our guides are committed to making your Humantay Lake experience safe, informative, and enjoyable.

Small-Group Experience
We prioritize personalized service by organizing groups of approximately 12 to 14 travelers, with a maximum of 16 participants. This limited group size allows our guide to provide more individual attention, answer questions, and support each traveler throughout the hike. Traveling in a smaller group also creates a friendlier atmosphere, improves coordination, and makes the overall Humantay Lake experience more comfortable, organized, and enjoyable.

Safety and Emergency Support
Your safety is our priority throughout the Humantay Lake hike. Our guide carries a comprehensive first-aid kit and a portable oxygen tank to provide immediate assistance in case of altitude-related discomfort, minor injuries, or other unexpected situations along the trail. Our guides are trained to monitor participants, recognize common symptoms of altitude sickness, and respond appropriately when support is required. They will also provide advice on maintaining a comfortable pace, staying hydrated, and adapting safely to the high-altitude conditions.

Drop-off in Cusco: Machu Picchu Team Office (Plaza Regocijo)
At the end of the tour, we’ll drop you off at the Machu Picchu Team office, located in Plaza Regocijo, just one block from the Plaza de Armas. The tour concludes between approximately 5:30 and 6:00 PM.

Free Luggage Storage
When you book the Humantay Lake Tour with Machu Picchu Team, you can leave your luggage safely at our main office, located just one block from Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, at no additional cost. The tour finishes at the Machu Picchu Team office, so you can conveniently collect your belongings as soon as you return from the excursion.

Can I pay the Humantay Lake entrance fee in US dollars or by card?

No. The Humantay Lake entrance fee must be paid directly at the local checkpoint in cash and in Peruvian soles. Credit cards, debit cards, foreign currencies, and digital payments are not accepted. We recommend bringing the exact amount to make the entrance process faster and easier.

Can I rent a horse for the Humantay Lake hike?

Yes. Horses are available to rent directly at the Soraypampa trailhead. The service generally costs between 90 and 100 soles, depending on availability and local rates. The rental usually includes the horse and a local horse handler who guides it along the trail. Please note that the horse may not take you all the way to the lake, and you may still need to walk a short final section. Payment must be made directly to the local horsemen in cash and in Peruvian soles. Your tour guide can help you arrange the service if required.

Is Humantay Lake worth visiting?

Absolutely. Humantay Lake is one of the most impressive natural attractions in the Cusco region. Its turquoise waters are surrounded by dramatic Andean landscapes and the snow-capped Humantay and Salkantay mountains. The combination of mountain scenery, fresh air, and the beautiful color of the lake makes it a memorable experience for travelers who enjoy hiking, photography, and nature. Many visitors consider it one of the highlights of their trip to Peru.

How difficult is the Humantay Lake hike?

The hike is considered moderate to challenging, mainly because of the high altitude and the continuous uphill section. The trail begins at Soraypampa, approximately 3,900 meters above sea level, and climbs to Humantay Lake at around 4,220 meters. The ascent usually takes between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on your physical condition, walking pace, and adjustment to the altitude. The descent takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Walking poles and horse rental are available for travelers who may need additional support.

What is the best time to visit Humantay Lake?

The dry season, from May to October, usually offers clearer skies, better trail conditions, and excellent mountain views. Morning light also provides beautiful conditions for photography. The tour operates throughout the year. During the rainy season, from November to April, the landscape is greener, but rain, clouds, and muddy trail conditions are more common. Travelers visiting during these months should bring waterproof clothing and appropriate hiking shoes.
