TRIP ITINERARY
Cusco – Cloud Forest – Paucartambo – Pilcopata Lodge
We will pick you up directly from your hotel in Cusco between 5:30 AM and 6:00 AM in our comfortable private transportation, ready to begin an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Amazon basin.
Our first stop will be the Chullpas de Ninamarca (3,750 m / 12,303 ft), ancient funerary towers built by pre-Inca cultures, offering a fascinating introduction to Peru’s ancestral history. We then continue to the charming colonial town of Paucartambo, known for its rich traditions, colorful folklore, and historic colonial bridge.
From there, we ascend to Acjanaco Pass (4,000 m / 13,123 ft), the official entrance to Manu National Park, one of the most biodiverse protected areas in the world. As we begin our descent, we enter the magical cloud forest, a lush and misty ecosystem full of life. Along the way, we will stop to walk through scenic trails surrounded by orchids, heliconias, ferns, and towering trees.
This area offers an excellent opportunity to observe the spectacular Cock of the Rock (Rupicola peruviana), Peru’s national bird, as it performs its unique courtship display. With some luck, we may also spot other fascinating species such as trogons, quetzals, and even the elusive Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus).
By late afternoon, we arrive in the small village of Pilcopata (550 m / 1,804 ft), where we will settle into our comfortable jungle lodge, located just outside the town. The lodge offers private rooms, private bathrooms, and showers, providing a peaceful and comfortable place to rest after a full day of travel and exploration.
Pilcopata – Atalaya – Machuwasi Lake – Paititi Lodge
After enjoying a delicious breakfast at the lodge, we continue our journey with a 45-minute bus ride to the port of Atalaya (490 m / 1,607 ft), where we board a motorized boat for a scenic 30-minute ride along the Alto Madre de Dios River. During the journey, keep your eyes open for wildlife, as you may spot colorful birds, monkeys, and other fascinating creatures of the forest.
We then arrive at Paititi Lodge, a cozy and traditional jungle lodge surrounded by nature, offering private rooms, bathrooms, and showers. This will be our accommodation for the night. After a freshly prepared lunch, we head out in the afternoon to visit the beautiful Machuwasi Lake (Cocha Machuwasi). Here, we board a traditional catamaran raft and quietly glide across the calm waters while observing the incredible biodiversity of the Amazon. You may see the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin (Shansho), monkeys, reptiles, dwarf caimans, insects, and, with some luck, capybaras (ronsocos), the largest rodents in the world.**
In the evening, there is also an optional night walk for those who want to explore the secrets of the nocturnal jungle and discover species that only become active after dark. We spend the night at Paititi Lodge, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the Amazon, with the comfort of private bathrooms and showers.
Paititi Lodge – Parrot Clay Lick – Cloud Forest – Pilcopata – Cusco
We start very early in the morning with a 45-minute boat ride along the river to reach the Parrot Clay Lick, a natural clay wall rich in salts and minerals. Here, you will witness an amazing natural spectacle as hundreds of green parrots, representing three to four different species, gather to feed on the mineral-rich clay, which helps them neutralize toxins and support digestion.
After this colorful wildlife experience, we return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast before beginning our journey back to Cusco. First, we travel by boat back to Atalaya, and then continue by private bus, retracing our route through Pilcopata (550 m / 1,804 ft), Patria, and Chontachaca. Along the way, we once again pass through the magical** cloud forest, with its lush vegetation, dramatic mountain scenery, and the chance for one last glimpse of the region’s unique wildlife.
We expect to arrive in the city of Cusco between 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM, bringing this unforgettable Amazon rainforest adventure to a memorable close.
