Faqs and Travel Guide
Frequently Asked Questions ONE DAY INCA TRAIL HIKE TO MACHU PICCHU
What is the One-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?
The One-Day Inca Trail — also known as the Short Inca Trail — is a guided hiking experience that follows part of the original ancient Inca path to the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu. Beginning at Kilometer 104 of the train line, the route covers approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) of stunning Andean scenery, passing through the impressive Inca ruins of Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna before arriving at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) — your first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu from above. It is the perfect option for travelers who want an authentic Inca Trail experience in a single day.
Is a permit required for the One-Day Inca Trail?
Yes. The Peruvian government strictly limits the number of daily permits available for the Inca Trail in order to preserve the route and protect the surrounding ecosystem. Permits are limited and sell out well in advance — especially during the high season from May to October. We strongly recommend booking as early as possible to secure your place.
How difficult is the One-Day Inca Trail?
The One-Day Inca Trail is a moderate hike suitable for most travelers in reasonable physical condition. The route involves approximately 4 to 5 hours of hiking at altitudes ranging between 2,050 and 2,720 meters (6,726 to 8,924 feet), with some uphill sections and stone staircases along the way. No prior mountaineering experience is required, but a basic level of fitness and a slow, steady pace will make the experience much more comfortable and enjoyable.
What is the highest point on the One-Day Inca Trail?
The highest point on the One-Day Inca Trail is the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), at approximately 2,720 meters (8,924 feet) above sea level. From here, you will have a spectacular panoramic view of Machu Picchu nestled among the mountains — one of the most iconic and unforgettable moments of the entire experience.
Can I hike the Inca Trail without a guide?
No. Hiking any section of the Inca Trail independently is strictly prohibited by Peruvian law. All hikers must be accompanied by a licensed professional guide and must book through an authorized tour operator. This regulation exists to ensure the safety of visitors and the long-term preservation of the trail and its archaeological sites.
What is the best time of year to do the One-Day Inca Trail?
The best time to hike the One-Day Inca Trail is during the dry season, from May to October, when trails are drier and mountain views are clearest. The trail is open year-round with the exception of February, when it is closed annually for official maintenance and conservation work. If you plan to visit during the rainy season (November to April), good waterproof gear and trail shoes are especially important.
What should I bring on the One-Day Inca Trail?
We recommend packing light but being well prepared. Essential items include:
- Sturdy, comfortable hiking boots or trail shoes with good grip
- Lightweight layers and a warm jacket (mornings at altitude can be cold)
- Rain poncho or waterproof jacket
- High-SPF sunscreen and UV-protective sunglasses
- Insect repellent
- A refillable water bottle and snacks for energy
- A small backpack to carry your personal items
- Camera or smartphone for photos at the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu
- Original passport (required for permit and Machu Picchu entry)
- Original student ID if applying for the student rate (under 25, PVC card required)
How much does the One-Day Inca Trail cost?
Pricing for the One-Day Inca Trail is regulated by the Peruvian government and includes the official Inca Trail permit, Machu Picchu entrance fee, and all required guide services. For the 2026 season, our group service rates start at $370 USD per person for students and children, and $400 USD per person for adults. Optional upgrades such as a Vistadome panoramic train return (+$35 USD) and professional trekking poles (+$10 USD) are also available. See our full pricing page for details.
What ruins will I see on the One-Day Inca Trail?
The One-Day Inca Trail passes through two remarkable Inca archaeological sites before reaching Machu Picchu. The first is Chachabamba, a ceremonial complex located near the start of the hike. The second — and most impressive — is Wiñay Wayna (“Forever Young” in Quechua), a beautifully preserved terraced site with fountains and temple structures clinging to a dramatic mountainside. The hike concludes at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), the ancient entrance to Machu Picchu, before descending into the citadel itself.
What happens after the hike — how do I return from Machu Picchu?
After exploring Machu Picchu with your guide, you will descend by bus to the town of Aguas Calientes (approximately 25 minutes), where you will have free time before boarding the scenic train back to Cusco or Ollantaytambo. A standard train return is included in the tour. Travelers seeking a more panoramic experience may upgrade to the Vistadome train for an additional $35 USD — featuring large windows and glass roof panels with stunning views of the Andean landscape and cloud forest.
